Should you extend or move?

A growing family, a change in lifestyle, a house that no longer fits. How to weigh up the two options.

Should you extend or move?

Moving costs money that never shows up in bricks and mortar: stamp duty, estate agent and legal fees, surveys and removals. On a typical Cheshire family home that can be tens of thousands of pounds before you've changed a thing.

When extending wins

  • You love the area, the schools and the neighbours
  • The plot has room to grow up or out
  • The cost of the work plus your current value stays sensibly below the street's ceiling price

When moving might win

  • The plot or the planning constraints won't allow what you need
  • You'd be over-developing for the street
  • You need a different location, not just more space

Use our Extend or move calculator for a quick side-by-side of the numbers.
